The Westerly Owners' Association - East Coast Group East Coast Group AGM and Laying-up Lunch
The East Coast Group's final meet of the 2011 season included our AGM, Laying Up Lunch, and an Area Committee meeting, all held on 29 October at the Crouch Yacht Club, Burnham-on-Crouch. We had decided on a lunchtime function following feedback from our failed attempt at a Fitting-out Supper last April. The format was successful, with 29 members present for the quite brief AGM, and all staying for lunch in the CYC Club House, with its magnificent views over the river, on a beautiful Autumn day. We were very pleased to see an increase in attendance from Kent-based members. One pair came by sea from the Swale, the only members to sail to the meeting – well done Winston and Carolyn! Our guest speaker after lunch was Ian Gray, a partner in Lonton and Gray, sailmakers in Burnham, who talked eloquently about sail design and manufacture, rigs and rig tuning with particular reference to Westerly boats, and sail care both afloat and ashore. Many highly practical points were covered both in the presentation and in a question and answer session, as a result of which we all hope to improve our future sailing. Ian also invited a group of members to visit his loft to watch the whole process of designing, cutting, and making a sail – an offer which we plan to accept in the next few months. At the subsequent Area Committee meeting, the following posts were agreed:
