The Westerly Owners' Association - East Coast Group
Medway Rally July 15th – 16th 2011
On Friday 15th July, 11 Westerlys met up at Queenborough for the start of the 2011 Medway Rally. The Queenborough trot boat was not operating so a couple of members got out their tenders and spent a happy half hour ferrying the others ashore. Members settled down in Queenborough Yacht Club for a bite to eat and then a quiet evening chatting over drinks. The evening finished with another bout of musical tenders and everyone settled down for the night.
On Saturday morning the Westerly fleet set off to sail in company up the Medway to Hoo Marina. We had a stiff SW 5-6 breeze, bang on the nose, so the conditions were quite lively. The Hoo Marina staff were surprised when all the yachts trudged in out of the rain as they had expected cancellations – but Westerly owners are not easily put off. Once all boats were settled in Hoo, members had a happy afternoon mooching round this fascinating area, steeped in history and a graveyard for many old sailing barges.
Saturday evening 21 guests met up for dinner at Hoo Ness Yacht Club. We had a very nice dinner of Prawn Cocktail, Roast Lamb and finished off with a selection of Desserts, and an excellent Cheese Board. Members lingered long over coffee before drifting back to their boats for a quiet night.
On Sunday, some members left Hoo Marina in the small hours, to catch the tide, while the rest slept on to enjoy a lazy Sunday morning before setting off just after midday. The weather was still problematic, and the heavily reefed yachts headed out into the wet, windy July afternoon to the accompaniment of the occasional flash of lightning and rumble of thunder. Another wet westerly weekend – but great fun!
