Commodore’s Message 14 Oct 2017
Just a quick reminder that there is still time to enter WOA’s Photographic Competition to win the prestigious Navigators & General Trophy.
The competition closes on 30 November 2017, so as to allow time for judging and the award at the AGM, so you have 6 weeks to find that perfect shot including 'all or part of a Westerly'.
You can find the Guidelines for entries here.
If your entry is suitable, it might feature on the front page of our Magazine!
Good luck with your entries!
George Pickburn, Commodore

Lobster pots campaign – sign the petition!
The Cruising Association has re-started the parliamentary petition on the government website following the general election.
Poorly marked lobster pots and fishing gear are a significant hazard for coastal cruising people. Fishermen, too, lose expensive gear as a result of entanglements. In one year alone, the RNLI has dealt with 295 incidents of fouled propellers.
It is time to work together to find a solution that is cheap and practical for fishermen. With this aim, the CA hopes to secure a government consultation about the effectiveness of the current guidance and the merits of enforceable regulations for the whole of the UK. We are seeking a consensus amongst fishermen’s organisations as well as the RYA, RNLI and others concerned with yacht safety.
If you support our campaign, please: sign the petition, even if you had already done so, as previous votes can’t be carried over.
You can also report incidents to the CA via firstname.lastname@example.org, or the RYA via this form. Tell your friends, family and club members about the campaign and petition.
It’s time to change the rules, for safety’s sake.
Yacht fined €500 for red diesel in Belgium
A WOA member in a UK-flagged yacht was stopped and checked after filling up with white diesel in Nieuwpoort, Belgium. Traces of red diesel were found in its tank and the owners were fined €500. For the past two years authorities in Belgium have been tolerating UK yachts with red diesel in their main tanks, but this may no longer be the case. Unless you have never used red diesel in your boat, you may want to reconsider any plan to pass through Belgian ports.
WOA MMSI Number

Its section "50 years of DIY boating" notes our own 50th anniversary, and includes "On the water with the WOA", describing Editor David Pugh’s sail aboard Commodore George & Jill Pickburn’s Westerly Storm. “It’s no wonder so many Westerlys are still sailing, and that their owners take so much pride in them,” was his assessment.|
