Rotostay 11 manual

Postby osheap » Fri Jul 30, 2010 6:13 pm

The rotostay furler on my Westerly Fulmar has seized. The problem seems to be with the drum furler, possibly with the bearing. Does anyone have a manual or set of instructions for dismantling the drum furler? It is 1990 vintage.

Hi,

Don't have what you enquire about but I'd suggest you call Ian Cochrane at XW Rigging, UK 02392 513553 or email info@xwrigging.co.uk. Ian owns Rotostay and maybe able to answer your query.

Hi Pat,

It occurs to me that having re read ur query that you probably only need to pour copious amounts of fresh water over the drum bearing to clear the build up of sea salt. I recall being told that years ago by Ian Cochrane. You'll find that the solution for the top bearing is different, unfortunately I cannot recall what it was.

Warm fresh water from the kettle may work even better/

Hi

I have tried both of your suggestions, ie copious amounts of fresh water and also some warm water. I had some success in that it was now possible to freely rotate the drum, however it sounded and felt rough. After some deliberation I decided to try and dismantle the drum. This was achieved by removing a plastic pin from the drum shaft and also an allen screw. When the drum was split, I could see two bearings, one of which was in very bad condition.

I now plan to call Ian Cochrane at XW Rigging as you suggested to discuss how I should proceed from here.

Many thanks for your suggestions.

Take the ball bearings to a bearing specialist & he will replace them for you for a few quid. A small amount of copper grease on reassembly may help them last a little longer next time.
